Stain Removal From a White Ceiling
from: Maxx Home GuidesRestoring the original luster to your once white ceiling is no easy task. Unfortunately from time to time, you'll have to deal with having to remove ugly stains from the ceiling. There are many different methods to accomplish this task and restore the ceiling to its beautiful luster.
Stain Removers
One type of ceiling maintenance is stain removers and liquid cleansers. These methods are very effective when dealing with acoustic ceilings and trying to restore color to specific ceiling tiles. It's also be effective on ceilings with a latex coat of white paint.
However, one warning when using a cleanser or any other product with bleach for ceiling maintenance is to start in a small area to see what difference the cleaner makes. You may need to clean the entire ceiling in an effort to maintain continuity and not create reverse staining. This occurs because the area you've cleaned is now more vibrant than the rest of the ceiling which will require you clean the entire ceiling in order to maintain continuity.
Painting
Another method of ceiling maintenance to get a ceiling back to white is to paint the ceiling. You could try to just paint over the stain with the original paint, however, this may not be a perfect solution to the problem. What may occur, depending on how recent ceiling was painted, is obvious bright spots on the ceiling. This creates a newer looking ceiling in certain spots thus bringing as much attention as a stain would have. Therefore, it's best to paint the entire ceiling.
Doing so will not only hide the stain, but will also create a brighter atmosphere in the entire room, which will make the room more inviting. Make sure you use the same type of paint that was used the last time it was painted to create continuity and to allow for better binding between the paint coats.
Replacement
If you're doing ceiling maintenance on a drop ceiling, it may be just as easy and simpler to replace the stained tile. Since the tiles hold color and are very durable, replacing one won't always create a big disparity which requies less work than painting or having to wash the entire area in order to eliminate the stain and its effects.
