Repainting Your Ceiling
from: Maxx Home GuidesYou've finally realized there's no rule that states every ceiling in the house must be painted white -- you can actually use some color! When you do, it will really change the look and feel of any room.
You've now decided to search through paint colors to find the perfect complement to your floor and walls and picked a tone that creates the effect you're after. Next, you've purchased the required materials and all that separates you from a beautiful ceiling and your new color is a few hours of painting. You're ready to go.
Actually, not quite. Resist the urge to start applying paint with nothing but a few pages of the local newspaper under foot. You have a little preparation work ahead of you.
First, remove everything you can from the room. Moving your sofa may be a pain, but you'll be much happier having done so than having to sit on a couch with paint spots on it. If you can get everything out of the room, do so to ensure you're protecting your furniture as well as getting better access to all areas of the ceiling.
When trying to protect stuff you couldn't move out, along with your floor, never rely on newspapers since paint will drip right through them. Newspapers often fail to stay in place and it's difficult to walk around on paper without accidentally creating bare spots. In addition, newsprint and your light-colored carpet isn't going to be a very good mix.
You'll be much better off using either heavy-duty plastic or canvas sheeting to cover the area. These materials do a great job of shielding everything from paint and they're easy to work on. If you're planning other remodeling projects, you'll be able to reuse them, which makes the extra cost worthwhile.
Finally, use high-quality painter's tape to protect moldings and trim. It will take some time to tape everything, but the final result is definitely worthwhile.
Once you've cleared the room, placed your protective sheeting and taped everything, you can move your paint and painting supplies into the room. Now you can get started and before you know it, you'll have a beautiful and revived room.
Repainting those white ceilings with colors will transform your home. However, doing it right requires planning and preparation. Don't paint your ceilings until you're ready because lack of preparation will likely produce a mess, lots of frustration and potential damage.
