Sliding patio doors are available in a variety of materials. Aluminum is the most common by far as well as least expensive. SInce aluminum doesn't rust, sliding patio doors made of this material are durable.

Another sliding door option is vinyl which is low maintenance and energy efficient. Vinyl sliding doors have tough frames which are easily maintained. With regular maintenance, sliding patio doors made from vinyl look new for years.

Wood is always be an option for sliding patio doors as well. They're the highest quality and provide the same natural aesthetic qualities as traditional wood doors. The main difference is that wood sliding doors provide a full view due to the large glass panes. This means, of couse, when purchasing high quality materials, wood doors are the most expensive.

A less expensive alternative is wood clad doors, which are wooden patio doors and frames with a coating on its exterior surface. The coating can be made from vinyl, fiberglass, or aluminum, depending on the type of wood clad door. The result is patio doors that are protected from the weather on the outside but have the look and feel of real wood on the inside.

* French Doors

French doors are manufacture using the same materials as sliding patio doors. However, in addition to vinyl, wood and aluminum, French doors are also made of steel and fiberglass.

French doors are set on frames and have the same characteristics of traditional entry doors. Some have either a left or right handed in-swing or out-swing, however, there are also French doors that swing both ways.
