The Most Popular Wooden Deck Materials
from: Maxx Home GuidesA critical part of building a deck is the choice of materials. Even though there are numerous deck materials available, wood is the first choice of homeowners wanting both beauty and durability. However, even if you've reduced your choice to a wooden deck, it can still be confusing figuring out which type of wood to choose.
Here are brief descriptions of different types of wooden deck materials to consider:
Pressure Treated Wood: One of the most popular deck materials, mainly due to it being less expensive than other types of wood along with its high durability. About 80% of pressure treated wood now available is Southern yellow pine, which features a prominent grain pattern, and a unique, greenish hue that eventually wears off and develops a warm, honey tone making a very striking finish. This type of wood should be available at most lumber shops.
Western Red Cedar: The colors of freshly cut cedar ranges from tan to light brown, and even salmon pink. If the wood remains untreated, the color eventually turns to a silvery gray hue to dark brown. While this wood is a soft wood, it's more durable than most other wooden deck materials since it's resistant to rot and decay but it has a tendency to quickly weather. Thus, it's recommended that some type of preservative or sealing treatment is added to provide the wood more protection.
Mahogany: This choice is available in large varieties. Both Honduras and Philippine mahogany are the best and most popular since they're considered the truest form of mahogany that displays that woven look with coarser grain textures.
Redwood: This type of wood is available in several grades that vary considerably in both quality and appearance. Colors range from a dark reddish brown to a light red and are widely categorized in grades such as clear heart, construction heart, and B-grade. The best choice is the clear heart grade since it's definitely more durable and provides higher resistance to rot and decay.
