Your Wood Deck Design Type: When building a deck you'll have a number of types to consider. A wooden outdoor patio deck can simply be attached to a strategic part of your home, such a kitchen or family room. Or consider a destination wooden deck design that isn't attached to your home. Another consideration is a wooden connecting deck that's composed of a number of smaller decks of different sizes and shapes which are firmly connected to each other with pathways.
Consider Your Deck Activities: Before you complete your deck design plan, it's important to understand the types of activities the family will be doing on the deck. Will it be used mainly for grilling and barbeques? Will you be having parties and entertaining your friends and guests? Or is it mainly a place for lounging around, relaxing and reading a book while enjoying your favorite beverage? Take enough time to determine the right type of wood deck design so you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each design based on your planned activities.
Determine the Deck's Size: The size of your deck is obviously important. If you have limited space and don't have a lot of time to entertain guests on weekends, then building a large, spacious wooden deck isn't really practical. When building your wooden deck, you can divide it into two separate areas -- one for lounging and another area for cooking and dining.
Deck Materials: You'll need to determine what materials you plan to use in your wood deck design for different structural parts. Wooden decks require concrete footings to make them sturdy and long lasting. If your wooden deck has to be on soft, sandy soil, it's even more important to build it for strength and with larger footings. Posts can also be 4" x 4" lumber that's strong enough to support the deck. However, if your deck will be above ground, 6" x 6" structural lumber posts are recommended.
