Workshop Garage Heaters
from: Maxx Home GuidesWhy should you get a heater for your newly remodeled garage? Obviously a major disadvantages of using your garage for something other than parking your car, such as a workshop or home office. Your garage is the usually reserved for your car, or where you store your lawn accessories and equipment.
If you've decided to use all or some of this space for other activities, you're going to have to deal providing heat during the winter season when it would be difficult maintain, say, a home office or workshop in the garage with no heat.
There are several ways to warm up a workshop-garage starting with porcelain heaters that work well and can keep a good size area warm. However, these heaters aren't meant for warming a large space for extended periods of time.
Another option is a kerosene heater, which are easy to turn on since most of them have an electric starter. There should also be a thermostat so you can regulate the temperature, but remember they have specific scent since they do function on kerosene! Thus, if you feel won't be able to deal with the smell, a kerosene heater isn't the bes choice for you. They can also be dangerous for your children if they have access to the garage and you'd definitely want to keep the garage ventilated.
Another popular choice is a gas heater, though you'll likely need to hire a professional to have it installed. You should be able to find a gas heater that fits your budget with many models to choose from, all of them relatively inexpensive. What's best about a gas heater is that it provides a consistent warmth and come in both manual and thermostatic control types. You'd likely prefer a model with a thermostat, even though its going to cost a bit higher.
Of two types of gas heaters -- vented and ventless, the ventless uses air from the room and the vented has a system that vents directly out of the garage. With the ventless system it's considered a disadvantage that the room must be kept vented at all times since the unit uses the air from the room where it's installed. However, compatred to kerosene and electric heaters, either type of gas heater will have a lower operating cost.
