The Pros and Cons of Battery-Powered Lawn Mowers

from: Maxx Home Guides

Starting from the later half of the 1950s to the 1970s, mowers operated by various lawn mower battery types were in wide production and usage. Mowers began looking to improve existing mowers in terms of costs, convenience, durability, strength and lightness.

Companies like Atco, Qualcast and Valor, were among the several others known to produce the most famous lawn mower battery models then -- but Atco was easily the largest of the three.

Additionally, these mower companies began to improve the lawn mower battery used. In the 1950s and '60s, the lawn mower battery was usually a 12V with a in-built charger; and with the capacity to operate on 200/250V of power supplies. Though originally meant for the existing petrol engine mowers, this lawn mower battery was eventually adapted by Atco to suit the new battery mowers.

Furthermore, the mower battery types were much comparable to those used for an average motor cars. It function by supplying power to an installed electric motor, which sent propelling energy into the cutting cylinder and back roller to move the machine forward.

Advantages: Models that used a mower battery -- as opposed to petroleum -- were quieter. They were also quite inexpensive, compared to the existing motor and petrol-powered mowers. For the first time then, users enjoyed the advantage of carrying mowing machines away from home, and using them. What needed to be done was to get the battery well charged – and then off they went to the field.

Disadvantages: Despite its mobility, the machine could only be used for the duration that the lawn mower battery could remain charged, which of course was short. Also, it could only mow a small lawn before needing a recharge, which eventually caused short span of battery powered mowing machine. Additionally, the battery added much weight for the mowers, because it had to be carried along with much attendant burdens.

The battery-powered lawn mower was eventually overtaken by cordless electric lawn mowers. The above disadvantage eventually gave rise to the electric lawn mowers, which came with safer, more convenient, and lighter weight models. In the long run, the battery-powered lawn mower became less, and less fashionable. And, by 70s they had almost gone out of the market.

Nevertheless, in the recent years, it resurfaced again. Considerations buyers made included the avoidance of polluting the environment with CO2 and the want for a quite mowing experience. On a general level, the usage is extremely limited.
