What is the Best Roofing Materials?
from: Maxx Home GuidesYour roof is certainly one of the most important parts of your home. When building a house, it's important to consider the quality of roofing materials to be used, its durability, along with its aesthetic value and style. Good quality, but reasonably priced roofing is what most of us would like to have for our new homes.
Or, if you need extensive renovations to your roof, it's a good time to choose a roof that will last for several of years and withstand any type of weather conditions, which is why you need to know where to find the best roofing materials suitable for your home.
Here's a list of a few popular and best roofing materials.
A roof can be made of composition shingles, wood shakes, clay tile, slate, concrete tile and metal. Shingles are made of fiberglass and paper, sheltered with asphalt, and covered with colored granules. This is one of the most commonly used and least expensive roofing materials. A composition shingle weighs about 200 to 350 lbs. and since this material can be used in different applications, it may not necessarily require a professional to do the roofing job. If you're an experienced home improvement DIYer, you may be able to do the installation yourself since this material can simply be nailed over an existing roof.
If you're looking for some style for your home, wood shakes may be a good choice. The best wood shakes are made from an old cedar tree. While this material gives you a very nice aesthetic look, it doesn't mean it will be long-lasting and sturdy because its composition is prone to molds, unwanted termites, and it could even rot over time. However, it does allow a cooler and a more insulated effect when it comes to ventilation.
Roof tiles, compared to shingles, can be costly and require professional installation because of its considerably heavy weight and the fragility of the material. Clay and concrete are the most common roof tiles that are now being used. Home and other building constructions that use concrete tiles must have a well-supported framework to keep the tiles in place for a long time.
Another roofing material often be found in more fashionable and stylish homes is slate, which looks like shingles but in a rock composition. Slate can be as heavy as a concrete tile and, like tiles, it requires a strong framework in order to be nailed in place. Tiles and slate are both good choice for durability and endurance and because they need less maintenance when compared to wood shakes.
Finally, a material becoming more popular is metal roofing. You can see them on houses just about everywhere because of its proven durability and long-lasting value. It doesn't get eaten up by fire and is relatively maintenance-free. When it comes to weight, this is relatively light compared to the rest of the roofing materials.
Planning for a good roofing structure for your home depends completely on your personal choice. However, you have to consider three important factors in choosing which are the best roofing materials to be used: make sure you know what style you want for your roof, determine the cost, and consider the location and whether the roof can resist the type of weather conditions in your area.
