Different Types of Roofing Materials

from: Maxx Home Guides

There are many different types of roofing materials available for you to choose from these days and when choosing the perfect one for your home, you need to consider the environment, weather conditions in your area, aesthetic value and your budget. Building your home requires every nook and cranny to be carefully choosen, but your roof should be one of the higest priorities. So, to help you find your perfect roof, here are the different types of roofing materials commonly used today.

Asphalt shingles is the most popular roofing material in the United States and Canada. The massive production and relatively low cost of asphalt shingles makes a good choice and one that other types of roofing materials can't match. Asphalt is available in many different colors and designs, which makes it easy for homeowners to find one that will suits their taste and preferences. However, one drawback with asphalt shingles is the constant need for maintenance and routine checks to find cracked shingles that need replacing. It's also advisable not to paint asphalt shingles as this will significantly contribute to the rate of deterioration.

Metals are another alternative for roofing materials. Commonly used in commercial structures, some residential owners choose metal because of its longevity, durability and aesthetic value. There are basically two types of metal roofing products: panels and shingles. Metal shingles are designed to simulate the traditional roof coverings such as the wood shakes, tiles and shingles. Metal roofs can significantly reduce energy costs because they're good insulators. However, the downside is their susceptibility to denting.

The slate is considered shatterproof but usually more expensive than other different types of roofing materials currently available. Most slate roofs come with a 50-year warranty, primarily designed to be lightweight and resistant to adverse weather conditions.

Tile roofing could be a good choice for your home. They're typically made from clay, slate or concrete and come in different shapes and sizes. Among the different types of roofing materials, tiles are the only ones that come with a lifetime warranty. The sheer resiliency of tile roofs can even resist intense heat and earthquakes. Since it's made from dense materials, the total weight of your roof can be quite heavy, which means you'll need to have structural reinforcements to support the added weight. However, there are lightweight alternatives that actually look and perform like the real thing.

With all the choices readily available today, it smartr to take some time and do some research to make sure you find the ideal material for your roof. This isn't an inconsequential matter since you’ll have to live under that very roof for the many years of your life.
