About Vinyl Siding

from: Maxx Home Guides

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular types of exterior siding available. Vinyl siding is made from polyvinyl chloride or more commonly referred to as PVC. PVC is an extremely durable material that is not susceptible to water or rotting. There are many positives about choosing vinyl siding as your exterior siding and a few negatives.

Here are some tips on choosing vinyl siding for your home exterior.

Vinyl siding has plenty of benefits for home owners building a new home or replacing their existing home exterior siding. One of the biggest positives is that vinyl siding is extremely durable and very easy to maintain. Most home owners can see a good 30 years of quality siding from vinyl. Vinyl can last much longer but the color does fade over time. Vinyl is extremely strong, second only to exterior aluminum siding and can easily cover up scratches. Vinyl, when colored is colored throughout the entire piece of siding, so any scratch shows color instead of aluminum or wood.

Vinyl siding is also extremely low maintenance. Vinyl siding can last for many years with only the usually once a year cleaning which can be done with a garden hose or power washer. Tough stains can easily be cleaned with bleach or other over the counter cleaners. You don't have to paint vinyl siding like other types of siding every 5 years and vinyl siding will look brand new for the years to come.

Vinyl siding comes in many, many colors. You can always find a color that is right for your home and neighborhood. Vinyl siding can also be embossed to make it look painted or even like wood.

One of the reasons many builders like vinyl siding besides the low maintenance, is its low price. Vinyl is much cheaper than many other siding options and is easy to install.

Vinyl siding can also help as an insulator. While you still need home insulation, vinyl is a great insulator and can help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

There are a few negatives to vinyl and most of them have to do with the fact that vinyl is made out of PVC. PVC is not good for the environment because it takes so long to degrade. Vinyl can also be a fire hazard if a home is on fire, because it can give off toxic fumes. Vinyl is usually safe for temperatures under 160 degrees, however keep your barbeque or other hot equipment away from the siding. High heat can cause the vinyl to melt and become damaged.

While vinyl siding is durable, during a storm with heavy wind and rain, vinyl can be prone to more damage than other types of siding such as wood and masonry. If you're building a new home or looking to upgrade your existing home, definitely check out vinyl siding. Vinyl siding is an affordable and durable way to make your home look great with extremely low maintenance requirements.
