When Hiring a Siding Contractor
from: Maxx Home GuidesMany home owners wanting to spruce up their home's exterior decide to add quality siding to their home. However adding exterior siding to isn't a small job and requires a professional contractor to remove the old siding and install the new siding. If you're interested in adding exterior siding to your home, here are some tips on hiring a siding contractor.
There are usually two ways you can hire a siding contractor. You can hire a siding company who employs their own contractors to install the siding to your home or you can hire an independent contractor who installs the siding you've purchased from another party. Both of these options have their pros and cons.
For companies who sell their siding as well as provide an installation service, it's very easy for a home owner to go to one spot and take care of all their siding needs. There are many siding companies who sell their own products and also set up installation. These companies are great for people who don't want to run around finding special siding options or want to save money buying siding from small companies or siding distributors.
However the downside is that you have to purchase the siding as well as the installation from one place. You might not have any say in who installs your siding and you might have less choice on what types of materials are available.
Buying your siding from one place and hiring an independent contractor to install it is obviously more work, but much better for customized or special jobs. You might want special wood siding that is only offered at one shop or you might like a specific contractor to do the installation.
Make sure any contractors who install your siding are licensed and insured. Many people try to cut corners and hire people who are handy men and not professional siding installers to save a few bucks. Siding isn't for beginners and you can do much more damage by paying a cheap wage or for an unqualified laborer to do the job.
It's also important when you talk to the contractor that you ask the right questions. There are plenty of questions that should be asked including:
1. How experienced are you at installing siding? What is your specialty?
2. Are you licensed and bonded?
3. Do you belong to any professional organizations such as the Better Business Bureau?
4. Can you show me pictures of homes you sided?
5. Can you provide references?
6. What kind of warranties will you give me, will it be written?
7. What kind of materials do you recommend for my home?
8. Does this project require a special permit and will you be able to handle everything involved with the permit?
9. How long do you think this job will take?
10. If there are any cost over runs, who's responsible for them?
If you're planning on adding exterior home siding, consider these questions to ask a professional contractor.
