Types of Home Siding

from: Maxx Home Guides

Exterior home siding is a major part of how your home appears from the outside. You want your home to look maintained, appealing and beautiful. Siding is what protects your home from the elements and gives your home its wonderful appearence.

Here are some tips abpit the types of home siding available.

There are many types of home siding, the most popular are vinyl siding, aluminum siding, and wood siding which includes cedar, cypress and redwood. While they all are a great way to side your home, each of these siding options has their pros and cons.

One of the most popular types of exterior siding sold today is vinyl. Vinyl siding's main selling points is that it is practically maintenance free compared to other types of exterior siding and usually costs less. Vinyl siding is made out of plastic PVC. While vinyl siding main selling point is that it is easy to maintain, the downside is that it is bad for the environment because it lasts so long.

Vinyl siding does not need to be painted, stained or extensively washed. Many people can usually do one quick wash per year to make vinyl siding look brand new. Vinyl siding also does not show scratches due to the fact that the color of vinyl siding is throughout the plastic panel. Vinyl comes in many colors and can be embossed to look like wood or painted. Vinyl siding can easily last 30 years or more.

Aluminum siding is also another great exterior siding option. Aluminum is very durable and light on maintenance. One of the great things about aluminum siding is that it comes in many colors to fit any home or neighborhood. Aluminum is also easy to maintain and will last for many years. You can usually clean aluminum siding with a power washer or even a garden hose. One of the downsides of aluminum siding is that it will dent easily and show small pings as well.

Another exterior siding option is wood. Wood siding is considered the most beautiful type of exterior siding available. Many home owners love the warm look of wood siding on their home. Wood siding can come in many different materials such as cedar, cypress and redwood. Sometimes called shakes, wood siding can be positioned either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Wood can also be painted in any color and stained as well.

Unfortunately maintenance is an issue with wood siding. Most homes with wood siding need to be painted every 5 years or so and if you stain your wood, you will probably want to stain it every year or two. Wood siding is also expensive and not for everyone's budget. However for people looking for a great looking home, nothing beats wood siding.

If you're looking to upgrade your home exterior or planning on buying a home and your builder gives you a choice of siding, look into the above popular siding options to make the right decision keeping in mind maintenance issues.
