Window Types

from: Maxx Home Guides

It goes without saying that windows are one of the most important components of a any home. They not only enhance the design of the structure, but also provides ventilation and illumination. This is why its extremely important to pay particular attention to the design of the windows you want for your home and to make sure they combine a good balance between appearance, cost and energy efficiency.

There are many types of windows available, but your choice largely depends on the overall design of your house. If you're building a house with a classic or traditional look, you wouldn’t want to install contemporary window that clash and have a contradicting effect on its appearance.

Here are the types of windows that can hopefully guide you in your decision making as to what type would most suitable for your house:

Double Hung Windows

This type of window has a classic style and appearance, and usually has hidden springs lower interior sash and other friction devices. There are specific varieties of sashes available that can be taken out, swiveled or titled so you'll be able to clean them thoroughly. This type also offers good ventilation from top to bottom.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are usually mounted on side hinges and can be maneuvered by cranks that move back and forth across the sash. They can be hung individually or in pairs and can be easily iped. Casements also "scoop" in the gusts of air to provide good ventilation.

Jalousie Windows

Commonly known as louvers, they're made of glass slats placed in metal clips you can open and close in unison. Although they provide very good ventilation, it can get quite chilly during the cold season, which can be a little tricky to clean since some dust and dirt can accumulate in the crevices of metals. Some people take out each glass slat and clean them individually. However, if there are minor cracks or chips, you can easily replace the glass slats forh minimal cost.

Tilt-Turn Windows

This type has a distinct European style and you can usually see this type in European-inspired residential structures. They can be tilted towards the room and can make a 180 degrees turn for easy clean ups. This feature allows individuals to make use of them for emergency exits should the need arise. However, if you plan to purchase this type of window, make sure to find one with the multipoint locking device, which ensures more reliable security.
