The Color of Your Living Room
from: Maxx Home GuidesAlong with your kitchen, your living room is usually the most used room in your home when it comes to entertaining guests. A living room can be the most difficult room to decorate since it needs to be both versatile and comfortable.
Most homeowners want their living room to be the focus area for friends and family. So the colors and design you choose sets the mood for your entire home. Some colors have a positive effect on people whereas other colors will make people feel gloomy. Yellow is a color that brightens your day whereas gray tends to create a dreary mood.
Before getting started decorating your living room, you should determine the mood you're hoping to create. Do you want your living room to create a peaceful atmosphere or a party atmosphere? Your preference will have a major effect on the look you're after.
Blue tends to be the most popular color in home decorating. Blue provides a sense of calm since it's associated with the ocean. This color can make a small room feel larger and it stimulates elated emotional responses. A blue gray tone is a popular shade to use in the living room.
Green is also popular because it represents nature and is associated with trees and plants. Using green is a more exciting color than blue but it still produces a sense of mental calm. It's easy on the eye and a great idea if you want to create a calming room.
If you aren't much of an ocean or nature person, consider using earth tones. Earth tones are in the brown family such as brown or tan and present a more rustic feel. Earth colors give off a feeling of closeness and warmth. For an added touch, add the color green to really bring you to the outdoors.
Reds and yellows are colors you might want to avoid for your living room. Red is an aggressive color and yellow can cause eye irritation and discomfort. If you're really set on yellow or red, try a soft muted yellow or a maroon color. Pink isn't the greatest color for a living room either because it's a feminine color better used in a little girls' room.
