Maximum Window Security

from: Maxx Home Guides

There's no doubt that windows are an important part of any home. No one could endure living in a house without windows, unless you're into residing in a cave or dungeon. However, the one down side is that about 30% of burglars enter homes through the windows.

Therefore your windows become an important area of the house that you will need to protect to ensure maximum security for your home.

So Where to Start?

The best way to ensure your windows are secure is to conduct a security review of your windows from the point of view of a burglar, which most the experts recommend to homeowners. So check all your window locks at the ground floor, all the way through to higher floors. Also inspect the window frames making sure they're strong and have no rusty, loose handles and hinges.

If your window are glass, check the quality of the glass. Consider replacing them with modern, double glazed units which are harder to break. If you have windows installed that seemed to be at risk, you can use a laminated glass with a width of about 6.4 mm., but be sure this glass conforms to PAS 011. If you have window frames made of wood, it's a good idea to secure the glass on the outside with wooded beading, as well as security screws which work better for window security than putty.

For a more ultimate window security, examine the existing key operated window locks. You can also install fitted moldings or hardware that will work better to secure the window frames. Avoid using handle locks since these can be easily broken. If you have some sort of fanlights or skylights, add extra protection by installing locks.

When installing locks, try to set them up so they're obvious from the outside, since many experts say this could discourage a burglar from entering the house since breaking the glass is likely to attract attention. Window blinds can help put off burglars as well because venetian blinds can be very noisy and difficult to get through.

Window security is a critical part of ensuring the safety of your home. If you're going to successfully protect your property from burglars, then you shouldn't forget about window security.
