When You Have to Pick a Lock

from: Maxx Home Guides

If you've ever been caught without having the right key your only choice might be to pick the lock. In most circumstances, picking locks is usually associated with criminal and illegal activities, although this isn't always the case. There are instances where locking picking is something that can't be avoided. For instance, if you lost your house key or you locked your car keys inside your car. I suppose you could always break a window or call a professional locksmith which is a better way to deal with the situation, but if you can do it yourself, it will save you some time and money having to do repairs plus you'll get the lock opened right away.

Picking a lock requires the right tool kit. Even basic lock picking kits contain a lock pin and a tension wrench. If you're in an emergency situation, you can usually replace the lock pin with a hair pin. Professional lock picking kits, on the other hand, usually include a variety of tension wrenches in a number of different shapes and sizes, covering several different styles of lock pins. Some include a locking picking gun that uses vibration to push all the lock pins up at the same time.

When you have no choice but to pick a lock is necessary, you start by inserting the tension wrench into the keyhole and try to turn the cylinder. You can then use the lock pin and gently pry up on the pins. As soon as the pins reach their normal opening position, you'll hear a clicking noise, which indicates the pins are in the right place -- which means the lock is open.

Another technique for lock picking, is called racking. Racking uses a lower precision level, and uses a special pick known as a rake. To use the rake, you just insert it into the keyhole until it reaches the back of the cylinder, then quickly pull it out so it hits all of the pins when it comes out. A tension wrench is also used as well to turn the cylinder.

The most difficult locks to pick are master locks since they have an excellent protection system, and aren't as susceptible to getting picked as other types of locks. Master locks were invented by Henry Soref in 1921, when he introduced the first lock to use laminated layers of solid steel. Even though master locks use the same picking system as other types of locks, ones that are in combined format will require a locksmith with a lot of patience -- and skill.

You can learn more about lock picking by checking out a number of available books that include illustrations which will show you the techniques step by step. A video or CD is often included that shows and explains the techniques in action. There are also xeveral books and videos made by true locksmiths, although others are more directed for people who just want to learn a bit more on the subject. If you're interested in becoming a locksmith or a professional lock picker, there are books and videos out there that will help you become proficient.

Whenever you buy a lock, keep in mind that just about any lock can be picked. Even so, some take a bit more time and patience than others. When buying a lock, always think in terms of safety and select one you know isn't easy to penetrate. This way, you can enough security in your lock -- and that you're safe and protected.
