Choosing Your Carpet Fiber

from: Maxx Home Guides

Selecting carpets for your home requires you to consider many different options. The wide variety of carpets in so many colors and styles, textures and fibers and quality can make choosing a daunting task if you're not prepared.

Currently the most popular choices are the loop pile and cut pile. Loop pile has individual strands of yarn pulled through the backing of the carpet twice, which creates a small loop.

Cut pile has the loop cut at the top, leaving tufts of yarn that stand straight up. Cut pile is normally more durable than looped pile and come in many styles, including shag, textured, saxony, and velvet. Loop pile choices include berber, cable, or sisal. You'll want to consider loop pile carpets in high traffic areas, since they are an excellent choice.

Of course, one of the main factors that will influence your final decision is the cost. Though wool carpeting in your home is one of the most luxurious types you can choose, most people can't really afford to fill the house with wool carpeting. If you feel you can't afford wool, you should keep in mind that even though it costs more to install, it's far superior than any other type of carpeting. There is absolutely no man made carpet fiber that has the rich look, feel and durability of wool -- nothing comes close -- and it can last for 30 years or more. So you have a choice between high quality that will last or less expensive carpeting that will have to be replaced more often.

Acrylic carpeting is quite similar to wool, and is even referred to as man made wool. It's resistant to moisture, fading, mildew, crushing, and staining, but keep in mind that it isn't the best choice for high traffic areas.

On the other hand, nylon carpeting is popular and recommended for high traffic areas. Even though nylon is one of the most expensive types of synthetic fibers, it's still cheaper than wool which is one of the reasons it's so popular.

Olefin is a low cost carpet material quite often used for indoor or outdoor carpeting. Olefin is colorfast and strong, very easy to clean but one drawback is that it can easily be crushed.

When choosing your carpeting, you'll need to consider the color and patterns. If you choose light carpeting colors, it will help to create a spacious effect by making the room appear to be larger. The down side, of course, is that light colors show much more soil than dark colors.

A household with pets small children is advised to go with dark colors. You'll have lots of different varieties of dark colors to choose from, which is great for those interested in style. Dark colors are especially suited for not showing stains and soiled areas from pets nearly as much as light colored carpets.

If you do select a light color and have pets or kids around, you're going to find yourself working twice as hard to remove stains or make them less noticeable. So make it easier on yourself and select a dark color if you're dealing with either of these situations.
