Choosing Your Carpets

However, despite all the variety you can choose from, the first priority when shopping is to buy the best quality carpet you can afford. Even if you're on a very tight budget, never skimp on your carpeting or your carpet pad, because quality will always last longer, wear better, and save you a lot of money in the long run.
Modern carpets are mostly made from either nylon, polyester or olefin. Nylon is the strongest material and most widely used. However, even though nylon won't wear down to the treads, it tends to fade and get scruffy looking. A good solution to help make your carpets last longer to purchase the proper padding and treat it with a stain resistant treatment.
When picking out a carpet, how do you know if it's good quality or not? The easiest way to determine quaility is to inspect the density of the carpet, which is the thickness and closeness of the pile, or each specific strand of fiber.
The closer the fibers are to each other, the better the overall quality. Try sticking your fingers into the rub or bend it to see if you can feel or see the mesh. The less you can feel and see, once again, it denotes a better quality carpet. Another factor is the level of twist -- the number of twists in 1 inch length of fiber -- the more twists the better the quality.
Pile density affects how well a carpet will wear, and the cut of the pile affects how the carpet looks. A plush cut carpet looks like a field of velvet with even color and it's great for a formal look.
A saxony cut carpet has irregular cuts of pile which gives you a great everyday look. Frieze is a very nubby twisted pile, with a less formal look although it wears very well.
When you're out buying carpeting don't get so caught up in choosing colors and patterns and forget to deal with the carpet pad. In additon to purchasing the best quality carpets you can afford, always buy the best quality of pad as well. Padding helps to reduce noise, and also helps to act as a cushion which makes it very important -- almost as important as the carpet itself.
So take your time and do a bit of research so you know exactly what type of carpets you're look for before you head for your local store. Quality and durability should be uppermost in your mind if you're going to come home with that wonderful carpet and pad that will make enhance your home and bring you much joy.
