Flooring Products

from: Maxx Home Guides

There are numerous flooring product choices available and so sometimes it may be a bit of a task choosing what will work best for your home. For those who like the avant-garde and chic, there is marble, slate and granite. For the traditionalist and the naturalists, there's natural cork flooring, bamboo and hard wood which are quite conservative choices. Of course, for the old school and the rustic, nothing can beat aged bricks.

Flooring products now are often chosen more for their properties and advantages more than its conventional appeal. Cork flooring, rather unheard of in the past due to its lack of robustness, are now chosen because natural cork floorings today are much sturdier.

Stone Floors

Natural stones are very impressive and versatile flooring products that can be left rough to emulate natural setting, or cut into geometric shapes. They can be also grouped into similar color and veining, assembled so that they display a pattern. Stone flooring products have ben used for centuries and are still quite popular to this day.

Stone flooring products include limestone, marble, slate, granite, terrazzo, flagstone, and travertine. While some dispute travertine as a category of limestone, it in fact is. Travertine possesses unique properties that make it distinguishable from limestone and marble. Limestone, marble and granite are expensive choices, especially if it has exquisite veining, although natural stone is among the most expensive flooring products because of its complicated preparation. In additon, stone flooring does require sturdy sub floors because of its weight.

Wood Floors

Wood flooring products, though more fragile when compared to stone, do offer one undisputed aspect: aesthetic. Wood floors are among the most beautiful floors as well as being versatile -- to a point. Wood floors do look better when aged, similar to brick, if not sturdier. Laminations and pour-on are popular for wood flooring to make them last. Wood flooring products include oak, maple, pine, bamboo, cherry, mahogany, and teak.

Carpet Floors

Carpet flooring products are best known for easy application. In reality, carpet flooring is often purchased without a packaged installation since it's relatively easy to install. Flooring product manufacturers thus don’t include the installation service in the package.

The critical component of carpet flooring is its fiber which determines the overall quality of the carpet. There are five basic types of carpet fibers: nylon, olefin, polyester, acrylic and wool. The most resistant is nylon, though many shy away from nylon because of its aesthetic properties. Olefin (or polypropylene) is also a strong fiber.
