However, many homes maintain a conventional style by using wood, and for purists who prefer tradition, hardwood floors are usually a staple.
What exactly is it about hardwood floors that they never go out of style regardless of how the times and interior design principles change? First, hardwood floors provide a natural sturdiness and reliability that can't be found in most home building materials. Concrete is great, but nothing beats a well finished hardwood floor for a truly natural touch.
Hardwood floors are expensive compared to most other types of wood but they do last a much longer given with proper care and maintenance. Wood types used include oak and maple, but if you have a limited budget, you might want to work with the latter, since oak woods are relatively expensive.
Having a hardwood floor in your home is an investment, but keep in mind that it's a one-time expenditure. This means you pay out a large sum just once since all you have to do is keep the floor clean and its finish intact so the next generations can have the same benefit. Diligent waxing will do the job as will constant cleaning.
However, what's best about hardwood floors is its natural look. Unlike concrete that gives off this cramped and stuffy atmosphere, wood in your home doesn't make you feel as trapped. Another benefit is that no two hardwood floors are exactly alike because each plank of wood is unique.
You can't help but admire the history of each hardwood floor plank, and perhaps that's why it's comparatively expensive. If you want your home to have this rich, old-house feel, you should definitely consider using hard wood for your flooring. Human beings, we want some semblance of nature in our surroundings to keep us sane and this is an ideal way to do so. Too much artificial building materials might seem ho-hum as time goes on.
Of course, to fully enjoy all the benefits of hardwood floors, proper care must be employed. Your floors should be cleaned out constantly and maintained with waxing and refinishings to protect their quality. Hardwood floors are organic and so they can decay if left unattended. However, if treated well, hard wood can last a lifetime -- or five.
