5 Steps To Building Your Home Office
from: Maxx Home GuidesIf you work from home you have lots of freedom, however, this doesn't mean you can just leave your files all over the place or meet clients in your living room, or use personal phones to transact business. If you want clients to take you and your business seriously, you should have a proper home office, no matter how small. An office will serve you well as a place to do busines and will also help you separate your family or personal affairs from business.
Here are some steps to help you build a home office:
Step 1: Locate the perfect place to setup your home office. A separate room, regardless of how small, is best since you'll be able to set a boundary between your home and office.
If you don't have a separate room, you may have to place dividers or walls for best results. A divider makes your workstation more professional looking and is more conducive to working. You should also explain to your kids and other family members the importance of respecting your place of work.
Step 2: It's a good idea to make an office floor plan so you can determine the arrangement for your furniture and equipment. Make sure everything you'll need everyday is within your reach. Most home-based workstations are arranged in a U-shaped, but you can use an L-shaped or whatever setup works best for you, especially if your space is cramped and small.
Step 3: Plan your wiring requirments. You'll need to consider electrical outlets plus phone and coaxial cable jacks you'll need for the smooth operation of your business. You should also consider investing in a surge protector, which will protect your equipment and increase its useful life.
Step 4: You may want to consider investing in two telephone lines for your business, one for taking calls and the secont for fax or Internet connections if you're not going to use a DSL connection. Some telephone companies will give a discount to small-to-medium-sized businesses so don't forget to check to see if your provider has any specials available.
Step 5: Purchase the bes office equipment and furniture that fits your plan. You should make sure everything you'll be using in your office matches the theme of your office and the available space.
Tables, desk lamps, chairs, shelves are some of the fixtures you'll need for your home office. You'll also need important electronic devices such as a computer (desktop or laptop), fax machine, and photocopier. In fact, you can buy multi-functional machines such as a printer combination that includes a scanner, fax and photocopier.
So, if you follow these 5 simple steps, it's likely you'll have no trouble setting up an efficient home-based office.
