The Best Home Office Music For You

from: Maxx Home Guides

Music has been proven to have an affect on a person's physical health, emotional state, communication skills, social functioning, and cognitive abilities. Perhaps that's the reason many expecting mothers play classical and soothing songs, hoping that music will stimulate the mental and emotional development of the child inside them.

Some companies utilize music to mask noise and sounds, but there are also a number of businesses that allow music to be played in their offices because they feel it's an effective way to enhance productivity and reduce stress in their employees.

However, the type of music played in different office settings varies quite a bit. Some offices play classical and soothing, mellow music, while others prefer jazz or novelty songs. With so much variety in the type of piped-in music available from various companies, you can't help wond what type of music genre is really the best for an office setting.

Some experts concur that music definitely helps improve the concentration of an employee or increases his or her productivity. Studies, however, have discovered there isn't a particular music genre that's ideal in an office setting. Different types of music have different effects on each individual.

In conventional offices, calming instrumental music could provide peace and serenity to some workers, but could also contribute to the slack of another group. A study featured in Communication Monographs in 1994 revealed that people get upset when they don't have the freedom to make their own music choices, primarily because they're accustomed to actively choosing the music they listen to.

Ideal Music for Your Home Office

Music affects people in two main ways. It either helps decrease stress levels or it intensifies psychological stimulation. If you're in a home-based setting, you don't have to worry about who has the authority to decide which music genre will motivate and inspire you to work harder. You have the freedom to decide for yourself the music you feel will help you optimize your mental, emotional, physical and psychological functions.

On the other hand, if you're sharing the office space with your wife, friend or business partner, you might have a problem. Unless you have similar music tastes with those you share your office with, you might have not be able to impose your music preference on others.

The best option is to compromise, especially if your music choices are totally different. For a more harmonious office environment plus independant choices, you can always use headphones when you need music to stimulate you mentally, which also means you won't disturb anyone else while enjoying your preferred music selections.
