Best Home Office Size: Does Size Matter?from: Maxx Home Guides
The Internet has now become a major part of the world of business and one major change it has brought is the rise of people who are able work from home and earn a good living. The World Wide Web has provided many opportunities for stay-at-home moms, retirees, computer and Internet experts, and even stock traders to do all of their business from the comfort of their own homes. The first challenge those people working from home are faced with is finding an ideal space for their mini office in their homes or apartments.
According to Lisa Kanarek's book, "Home Office Life: Making Space To Work At Home", you should concentrate more on the functionality of your home office, rather than how much space you have available for the office. It doesn't really matter if your business area is no more than a closet or a small room or an empty pantry or just an area within your kitchen. What's important is whether you can completely operate your business from that small nook or cranny.
Technology now makes it possible to cram an offices into a small space. Those days are long gone when you needed a large filing cabinet, bulky printers, photocopying and fax machines, and large personal computers. Everything is now slim and small.
If you have available a small room or corner that can be used as a home office, pay particular attention to the office equipment you're going to use. Rather than a cathode ray tube monitor for you desktop computer, you can now choose an LCD monitor. You can even use a laptop rather than a large desktop computer if you have a slightly bigger budget. Another way to save space is to purchase a multi-functional machine instead of a separate printer, fax machine, scanner and photocopyer.
Computer tables, cabinets and shelves are necessary office fixtures, however, equipment available at office warehouses or department stores are usually big and bulky. Instead of buying new furniture, why not rummage around in your attic or basement to see if you have any unused items than could double as an office chair, desk or storage device.
Three Elements of a Home Office
According to architect Neal Zimmerman, author of "At Work, At Home: Design Ideas For Your Home Workplace", the three important elements ideal home offices have in common are good organization, a perfect balance between work and home, and an atmosphere or ambiance that mirror the owner.
Therefore, you really don't have to dwell on the size of your workplace. It's best to simply ensure that before you start setting up your office nook, you've created a plan that will help you achieve these three key components of a good home-based office.
