Accent Lighting Techniques

from: Maxx Home Guides

The categories lighting falls into include ambient or general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is generally used to illuminate a specific area while task lighting provides illumination for work areas or spaces such as for cooking, reading, doing your favorite hobby or at a work bench. Accent lighting caters to the decorative aspect of a lighting plan and highlights specific areas or objects in a room deemed worthy of accentuating.

Accent lighting can highlight artwork, plants, a statue, a uniquely textured wall, basically anything you would like to emphasize in any room. Picture in your mind the final effect you're hoping to achieve and work on this by selecting the appropriate level of brightness, color of the light, angle of beam, location of source, and the light fixture it comes with.

Here's a few different techniques for accent lighting that can be applied.

Grazing

Grazing is often used to bring out the distinct and interesting textures of a wall and is usually placed about 3 inches from a wall. Depending on the wall's dimension -- this could be employed in a series pattern.

Silhouetting

Light is placed behind an item and beamed straight up to accentuate its outline or frame.

Moonlighting

Moonliging requires placing the lights at a high level, and is usually done with recessed lighting in the ceiling. Soft incandescent reflector bulbs are used, such as shining light over plants, which creates beautiful patterns on the floor.

Shadowing

This is done by placing light inside the plant just behind the trunk and beaming the light upwards, creating interesting patterns onto a wall or ceiling.

Spotlighting

Spotlighting highlights a focal point in a room or makes an object, statue or plant stand out. This type of lighting should be used sparingly to maintain a consistent focal point in one area.

The most common accent lighting fixtures are track lights, under-cabinet lights, sconces, and more. Any combination of these depends on your preference and of choice with the desired accent lighting effect in mind.

You might also consider using LEDs, which produces very little heat. These are very flexible and durable for use in various accent lighting applications and energy efficient as well.

Accent lighting will complete your lighting needs along with ambient lighting and task lighting. All three types can work together to bring out the desired effects.
