Finding Your New Sofa
from: Maxx Home GuidesWhen the time comes to dispose of your old sofa and start searching for a new one to freshen up your livingroom, homeowners are either eager to get out there shopping or do everything they can to pretend the old couch has another year left in it in order to avoid taking action.
Finding the right sofa isn't always easy, especially if getting a new sofa will also require some livingroom renovations to ensure it fits in with the room's decor. Often finding the right sofa requires searching store after store until you're exhausted from all the driving around.
Here are some guidelines to consider to help make the job easier:
* Size: The first task is deciding on the size and style of sofa you want. This doesn't always mean the size of your room will determine the size of your sofa since you have to make sure it fits through the door. Thus you'll have to take measurments, including the length, width and height of the sofa to determine the maximum size your room can handle.
* Color: It isn't a good idea to choose a flashy sofa with bright colors since it may look dreadful and out of style in no time at all. Neutral colors are your best bet because you can always add brighter colors using sofa accessories, such as throw pillows that can be easily changed when you want to update the look of your living room by rearranging your pillows or by changing their color.
* Assess Your Lifestyle: Consider your lifestyle when choosing the material used for your new sofa. If you're replacing a sofa in the family room where everyone uses it to watch TV, you're going to need a more durable material than a sofa in a formal living room that gets much less activity. If you have kids, then you know how rough they can be on furniture, so avoid delicate upholstery such as satin.
* Pattern: If you want a plain design then it's relatively easy to choose toned down colors. On the other hand, if you prefer a patterned upholstery you can choose a pattern that can conceal "add-on" designs (those patented by your son). Multi-colored patterns help hide dirt and stains your kids are bound to cause.
* Inspect the Sofa: While shopping for a new sofa, give yourself lots of time to carefully examine each sofa that catches your eye. This includes inspecting the underlying construction, the quality of the material and the over-all look of the sofa. Sit and lounge on it the same way you do at home to get a better idea of the feel of the sofa. If other members of the family are with you, invite them to try the sofa as well. This will ensure there are no surprises when your new sofa is delivered.
In addition, you should inspect the accents of the sofa along with the trimmings, the wood used in construction, the paddings, and determine whether the design and style will be something you'll enjoy for several years to come.
Of course, you're also going to have to determine whether the sofa will fit into the decor of your livingroom. If you're prepared to do some remodelling, then you can choose whichever sofa catches your fancy and then renovate the rest of the room to match.
